Bitcoin Price Disappears from China's Douyin (TikTok Version) After Brief Appearance
The Bitcoin price is no longer displayed on China's TikTok version, Douyin, after a brief and surprising appearance. Bitcoin search results were abruptly removed from the Chinese app called Douyin, which recently displayed the token’s price on its platform. This sudden change has sparked widespread discussion and speculation about China's stance on cryptocurrency.
Over the past day, several users took to Twitter to reveal that one of China's most popular social media applications, Douyin, had started displaying Bitcoin price in real-time. Douyin, China’s version of TikTok, had implemented this feature, allowing users searching for bitcoin prices to be greeted with a real-time price ticker. Tron founder Justin Sun even revealed the new feature on China’s Tiktok earlier on Monday, showing the Bitcoin price displayed against the Chinese currency when searched on the platform.
However, this display was short-lived. China’s Douyin app, the Chinese market’s equivalent of social media platform TikTok, has now taken down the bitcoin (BTC) price ticker a few hours after it went live on the app. Douyin, which is a censored version of TikTok, has removed monitoring of the bitcoin price hours after adding the feature. The initial move prompted some to suggest this could be a softening of Beijing’s stance on cryptocurrencies. Given that social media within China is tightly controlled, it is possible that this initial display, however brief, was another signal.
The decision by Beijing to permit the display of Bitcoin’s price, even for a short time, on a major social network platform in the country is indicative of an increasing level of recognition and, possibly, a reassessment of the complete ban on cryptocurrency information. The subsequent removal leaves many wondering about the regulatory landscape and future of Bitcoin in China.
