BRICS 2024 Expansion: Could Turkey Become the First NATO Member to Join?
The potential for the BRICS alliance to welcome its first NATO member is generating significant buzz. Could Turkey, increasingly disillusioned with the West and seeking alternative partnerships, be poised to join the bloc? Recent developments suggest this possibility is more than just speculation.
After 13 years without expansion, the BRICS alliance underwent a significant transformation at its 15th summit in Johannesburg on 22-. The expansion that took place on January following the summit in Johannesburg became the most important event in the 15-year history of BRICS. Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates were welcomed into its ranks, signaling a new era for the organization.
Turkey's growing interest in BRICS is fueled by a perceived lack of support from Western allies and a desire to diversify its economic and political relationships. Ankara's dissatisfaction with the West is no secret. Indeed, 4 de sept. de 2025 shows Turkey is the first member of Nato to formally apply to join the emerging market Brics alliance, which China and Russia head.
Turkish President has even expressed interest in closer ties with organizations traditionally aligned against NATO interests. He's even vowed to make Turkey the first NATO member to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a China-led international security group.
While the BRICS 2024 expansion didn't include Turkey, the door remains open for future consideration. That being said, the BRICS alliance is likely to invite 5-8 nations to join the collective at the 2025 summit. Late last year, India’s officials disclosed the bloc’s agreement, making 2025 a pivotal year. If Turkey’s application is successful, it would mark a significant shift in global power dynamics and raise profound questions about the future of NATO and the international order.
