BRICS Meet Discuss Finalize Expansion Efforts: What's Next for the Expanded Bloc?
The BRICS bloc, comprised of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has been at the forefront of global discussions, particularly regarding its ongoing expansion efforts. Rising tensions between the West and China, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, mean emerging powers see the BRICS as a vehicle for more independent foreign policy. This has led to significant interest from numerous countries seeking membership.
The 20th BRICS Summit held in 2025 marked a pivotal moment in the bloc’s history, with the addition of Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the UAE as members signalling BRICS’ growing influence. This expansion, finalized after years of deliberation, has sparked debates and discussion these several years, long before Ethiopia, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were finally admitted.
Finalizing the Expansion Document and the 2025 Declaration
Key meetings are underway to solidify the expanded BRICS framework. Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira announced that the Rio meetings will pave the way for the 17th BRICS Leaders’ Summit on July 6-7. Heads of state from member nations are expected to attend.
The BRICS Sherpa meeting, scheduled to take place from July 4th to 6th in Durban, will focus on finalising the expansion document to be considered by the foreign ministers. Crucially, tomorrow (29), the ministers are expected to finalize and publicize a joint declaration that will subsidize the BRICS 2025 Final Declaration. The document will outline the strategic direction and priorities of the expanded BRICS alliance.
