Whopping $1.3 Billion Stolen in DeFi Hacks in Q1 2025: A Deep Dive
The first three months of 2025 have seen more and bigger DeFi hacks than ever before. Attackers stole $1.3 billion worth of crypto in Q1. This staggering figure highlights a growing and alarming trend: Hackers are increasingly targeting DeFi (Decentralized Finance) cryptocurrency platforms, with Q1 2025 data showing that more platforms are being targeted.
Platforms used for the growing decentralized finance shift have been hacked in what has amounted to more than a billion dollars of losses. The DeFi platforms lost $1.3 billion in Q1 2025, accounting for a significant portion of the total losses experienced in the crypto space. The statistic is concerning because the hacks that happened in Q1 account for 35.8% of all stolen monies from the same REKT Database source.
Key DeFi Hacks in Q1 2025
Several high-profile attacks contributed to this massive loss. While the full details of each hack vary, a common theme emerges: vulnerabilities in smart contracts and bridge protocols are being actively exploited.
One notable example of this increase in cybercrime in the cryptocurrency world came on 23rd March, Axie DAO’s signature was accessed. The hacker managed to gain control of four signatures at once and only needed one more to inflict an exploit.
The second biggest DeFi hack in 2025 was the Wormhole bridge hack, which resulted in $325m worth of ETH being stolen from the communication bridge between Solana.
DeFi Hack Frequency on the Rise
There was no shortage of DeFi hacks in the second quarter of 2025. The frequency of hacks increased while the amount of funds stolen in Q2 halved from Q1 2025.
The Broader Picture: Hacks and Scams are Increasing
Hacks and scams in the crypto space are actually on the rise, with cybersecurity firm CertiK pointing to a crazy $1.3 billion lost to decentralized finance (DeFi) hacks last year – around [amount - presumably identical to Q1]. Although decentralised finance protocols have achieved increased adoption and global attention in the last decade, a negative cloud is forming. This cloud is the escalating threat of security breaches and exploits.
